The Oakland Raiders have wrapped up their 2019 organized team activities and have just a few minicamp practices until the team is off for the summer. But before we get to minicamp, here are three of the biggest takeaways from the team’s OTA sessions.
1. Vontaze Burfict is taking a leadership role on and off the field
We all made fun of the Raiders for signing Burfict and for a good reason. His on-the-field antics over the last few seasons had gotten out of control.
However, his ability to connect with the younger players and help teach them Paul Guenther’s defense is impressive. Multiple players, including Maurice Hurst and Tahir Whitehead, have already mentioned his leadership ability and his intelligence. Look for Burfict to become an essential part of this defense in 2019.
2. Karl Joseph and Johnathan Abram could be on the field together in 2019
At the beginning of OTAs, fourth-year safety Karl Joseph started with the first team along with veteran Erik Harris. But Johnathan Abram has slowly worked himself into a starter, playing with Joseph in their nickel package. Whenever Lamarcus Joyner got into the slot, expect Joseph and Abram to be the safeties on the field.
3. Tyrell Williams is already meshing well with Derek Carr
Antonio Brown has been the star of Raiders’ camp so far, but it has been another receiver who has caught the eye of Derek Carr: Williams.
The Raiders desperately lacked deep speed in their offense after Martavis Bryant flamed out. Williams is a better player who is already establishing a connection with Carr. While Brown is obviously going to get the most media attention, don’t be surprised if Williams becomes a household name by the end of the 2019 season.
