The Pittsburgh Steelers had a very active 2019 NFL draft. So much so there could be three rookies who realistically could take veteran’s spots in starting lineup and three more who could push veterans down the depth chart. But here are three veterans who have to be happy about how the draft turned out.
Xavier Grimble, tight end
With all due respect to Zach Gentry, he isn’t ready for prime time in the NFL yet. He might be at some point but for now, Grimble has a huge advantage to be the team’s No. 2 tight end behind Vance McDonald. We thought the Steelers might draft a tight end to challenge for the backup spot but it doesn’t feel like Gentry has the polish in any facet of his game to challenge Grimble.
Ola Adeniyi, edge

The Steelers can never have enough pass rusher. But aside from Sutton Smith in the sixth round, the Steelers didn’t feel a need to add any depth at outside linebacker. And there’s a real possibility Smith changes positions in the NFL. This means the door is wide open for Adeniyi to become the primary third pass rusher in the rotation. No, we haven’t forgotten Anthony Chickillo but he brings almost nothing to the defense as a pass rusher.
Marcus Allen, safety

Another position the Steelers ignored in the draft was safety. Yes, they did sign WVU safety Dravon Askew-Henry but no draft picks were spent on a position of significant need. Let’s hope this is because the team feels like Allen is ready to a step in year two and be the team’s third safety in sub packages.
