When the Pittsburgh Steelers get together for training camp in late July, jobs will be on the line. There are going to be some very high-profile position battles to watch. But we wanted to share three which might fly under the radar but could have huge significance for the players involved.
Sutton Smith vs Roosevelt Nix
The second we heard the rookie Smith was getting reps at fullback, we thought of Nix. Fewer and fewer teams are keeping a true fullback on the roster and Smith could replace the special teams production as well as working at the occasional blocker.
Brian Allen vs Jordan Dangerfield

Last chance for both of these guys. Dangerfield is a pure safety and Allen still seems to be a player without a position. Allen is the better physical specimen but Dangerfield offers some experience. Only one of them likely makes the team.
Xavier Grimble vs Zach Gentry

When Jesse James left, the easy choice to replace him was Grimble. But the addition of Gentry in the draft muddies the waters. Grimble is a better athlete but it feels like as a football player he’s peaked. Gentry didn’t have great college film but every player is drafted on potential so this will be one to watch.
