3 men hurt in South Shore shooting

Police officers investigate the scene where three people were shot July 14, 2021, in the 2100 block of East 71st Street. | Ashlee Rezin Garcia/ Sun-Times

Three men were wounded in a shooting Wednesday evening in the South Shore neighborhood.

Just after 6:30 p.m., the men, 32, 53, and 64, were walking on the sidewalk in the 2100 block of East 71st Street when an unknown vehicle approached and someone inside fired shots, Chicago police said.

All three men suffered gunshot wounds to the leg and the 53-year-old was also struck in the arm, police said.

They were all transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition, according to police.

At least 30 shell casings littered the ground on both sides of 71st Street.

Crime tape blocked off the intersections of 71st and Clyde, Merrill, and Paxton Avenues — stretching at least three blocks. A trail of blood began on the North Side of 71st crossing over the train tracks to the South corner of Merrill Avenue.

Just behind the tape, a birthday party continued with a group of children running around nearby.

Less than three weeks ago, one person was killed and five others wounded in a mass shooting near the corner of 71st Street and Clyde Avenue.

In that attack, six people were standing outside in the 2000 block of East 71st Street around 8:45 p.m. when a gunman opened fire from a passing black SUV, according to police
