3 Seahawks who could be 1st time Pro Bowlers in 2020

The Seattle Seahawks have been well-represented in the Pro Bowl, the NFL’s postseason All-Star event, over the past few years.

While Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner are candidates to be selected for the Pro Bowl nearly every single year, there are still a handful of Seahawks who have yet to make a Pro Bowl appearance, despite strong performances in the league.

The COVID-19 crisis could very easily cause the Pro Bowl to be suspended for the upcoming season, which could rob some very deserving candidates of a shot at recognition.

Time will tell how the league eventually decides to handle their All-Star event, but if it does end up occurring, here are three Seahawks who have a good chance of being selected for the first time in their NFL careers in 2020.

Free Safety Quandre Diggs

While Quandre Diggs has been a stellar defensive back throughout his five year NFL career, where he has lined up in multiple different spots, it was his five-game cameo at free safety for the Seahawks last year that saw him really shine.

An injury limited him to just the five games, but if he is able to play a full 16-game slate as Pete Carroll’s cover-3 free safety, there’s very little reason to believe he won’t play at a Pro Bowl level based on what we saw last year.

In his five games with the Seahawks, Diggs had 21 combined tackles, three interceptions (which led the team) one touchdown and one forced fumble.

Alongside Bradley McDougald, the Seahawks will once again have a stellar secondary in 2020 – and Diggs could easily be a Pro Bowler, if he stays healthy.

Running Back Chris Carson

Chris Carson rushed for over 1,100 yards in each of the past two seasons, topping out at 1,230 in 2019 across 15 games. He tacked on 37 receptions for 266 yards and a pair of touchdowns, giving him nine scores on the campaign.

Carson’s 1,496 yards from scrimmage was 10th in the NFL last year, and there’s little doubt if he stays healthy for an entire season he will be on the cusp of making a Pro Bowl.

The health is of course the big challenge. Even after playing 14 games in 2018 and 15 last year, Carson is still a risk heading into 2020 thanks to season-ending hip surgery that could linger into training camp.

All signs indicate he will be good to go by 2020, however, a fact that cannot be stated for Seattle’s No. 2 running back, Rashaad Penny.

If Carson is healthy and Penny is still banged up when Week 1 rolls around, that could clear a path for Carson to put up even bigger numbers in the first part of the season, which could be enough for him to make the Pro Bowl for the first time in 2020.

Wide Receiver DK Metcalf

Making the Pro Bowl as a wide receiver in the NFC is no easy task, and while DK Metcalf had a very strong rookie season (58 receptions, 900 yards, seven touchdowns) he will have to take a step forward if he wants to get recognized in 2020.

While Tyler Lockett is still in the mix, the Seahawks will be counting on Metcalf in a major way this season, with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer already indicating they plan to move him around on offense next year.

The Seahawks added some more weapons for Russell Wilson to play with, including receivers Phillip Dorsett and Freddie Swain, and tight ends Greg Olsen, Colby Parkinson, and Stephen Sullivan.

However – Metcalf will be either the first or second most targeted player on Seattle’s offense, and Wilson’s impeccable accuracy on deep throws combined with Metcalf’s speed and physicality make him a potential superstar in this league.

If he puts it all together in year two, Metcalf could be making his first of many Pro Bowl appearances at the end of the season.
