3 Seahawks snubbed in 2020 NFL Pro Bowl selection

The 2020 NFL Pro Bowl rosters were officially announced Tuesday evening and only two Seattle Seahawks were named as starters – quarterback Russell Wilson and linebacker Bobby Wagner.

Both are certainly deserving, but there are more than a few Seahawks who should have also made the cut.

Seven other Seattle players were named as alternates but were clearly snubbed this season, having failed to make the first team.

Here are the three major Pro Bowl snubs this year for the Seahawks.

No. 1 Snub – Running back Chris Carson

Chris Carson may have had issues with ball security this season, but he is simply still one of the better backs in the NFC.

Carson is currently fourth in the league with 1,190 rushing yards – his second straight 1,000+ yard season – and is behind only Nick Chubb, Derrick Henry, and Christian McCaffrey, all selected to the Pro Bowl this year. Carson is also tied for fifth in the league with seven rushing touchdowns.

Carson may not be the flashiest player at the position, but is remarkably consistent and dominant. The third-year pro is an underrated aspect of the Seahawks offense, which is incredibly difficult to stop once Carson gets going.

No. 2 Snub – Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney

Admittedly, with only three sacks on the year, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney’s stats do not leap off the page at first glance.

However, raw numbers hardly ever tell the whole story. When watching the Seahawks defense, it’s painfully obvious how much Clowney disrupts opposing offensive lines. Clowney is a pure force, consistently breaking through to harass quarterbacks and running backs.

The biggest example was on “Monday Night Football” against the 49ers. Clowney was everywhere and a major factor why the Seahawks were able to ruin the Niners’ perfect season.

Clowney is also still the only front seven defender with multiple touchdowns (2) on the year.

No. 3 Snub – Cornerback Shaquill Griffin

The Seahawks secondary may not be what it once was, but that is not indicative of the play of third-year corner Shaquill Griffin.

Last year was rough for Griffin, ranking as the 111th corner out of 112 graded by PFF. This year, Griffin has raised his abysmal 2018 rating of 54.7 to a lofty 81.1 for 2019.

Griffin may not have an interception on the year, but he has already matched his career-high in tackles with 59 and has 13 pass deflections, which is only three away from a new personal record. Both those numbers are more than  49ers corner, Richard Sherman, who was named to the Pro Bowl ahead of Griffin.
