There are still a number of quality players that remain unsigned this far into the offseason. Looking at the Patriots roster, there are no major holes at the moment but this is the time to add more bodies at positions of need to see who comes out on top.
3. TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins
Seeing the Patriots bring back Seferian-Jenkins would not be a surprise in any way. There is still a large cloud of uncertainty over the tight end position and the team is clearly still trying to make ends meet with the recent attempt to acquire TE Michael Roberts from the Detroit Lions. When Seferian-Jenkins was initially released, it was announced that he was taking a break due to personal issues. If those issues are resolved before training camp, there would still likely be a fit in New England for him.
2. DL Allen Bailey
Despite losing Trey Flowers in free agency the Patriots have balanced his departure with the addition of players like Michael Bennett and Chase Winovich. Bailey is certainly a player to keep an eye on, given the Patriots’ interest in him earlier this offseason. Bailey had a productive 2018 with the Chiefs and would be a versatile piece along the defensive line in New England. With the current depth at the position, there may not be an immediate need for Bailey, but an injury or trade somewhere along the roster could always open up opportunity.
1. OT Donald Penn
If all goes well, Isaiah Wynn will be completely healthy and slide right into the starting line up at left tackle once training camp kicks off. At the moment, though, it is unclear where Wynn stands in his recovery from an Achilles injury last preseason. Taking that into account, the Patriots could look to free agent Donald Penn. Penn is an established veteran who could provide ample competition or even quality reps if, for whatever reason, Wynn were not ready. In addition to Penn, other veterans like Ryan Schraeder or Jeremy Parnell could provide similar production.
