One of the more interesting developments from the NFL scouting combine as far as the Pittsburgh Steelers are concerned is the team’s interest in former Oklahoma wide receiver Marquise Brown. In case you didn’t know, the speedster is the cousin of Antonio Brown. Why on earth would the Steelers be giving Brown so much attention considering all the drama surrounding his cousin and Pittsburgh? We’ve got three ideas.
Marquise is a perfect replacement for Antonio
Sometimes the correct answer is the simplest. In terms of body type and play style. Hollywood Brown is the closest thing there is in this draft to Antonio. He’s built very similarly, models much of his game after Brown and plays with impressive deep speed. There are several top receivers in this class but more of them are big-bodied bruisers similar to JuJu Smith-Schuster or even Martavis Bryant but Hollywood is tailor-made for that outside role in the Steelers’ offense.
Interest in Marquise is just a public shot at Antonio
Perhaps the Steelers don’t have any interest in Brown at all. This could all be a smokescreen by the team to feel both players out and to take a shot at Antonio. This would be petty and perhaps outside the realm of what the Steelers would do but after everything Brown has put them through, nothing would surprise me at this point.
Drafting Marquise might please Antonio
Last and certainly least, the Steelers might be looking to bring Hollywood Brown into the fold to somehow make AB happy. It isn’t likely and I shudder to think what the fanbase would think if this were the case. That by considering drafting his cousin, Brown would be ok with staying with the Steelers. I refuse to believe this is the case and so when it ultimate happens I’m going to feel pretty dumb.
