After more than a year of speculation, we now finally have our answer — Reshad Jones has played his last game as a member of the Miami Dolphins. Miami will release Jones next Wednesday, and then he will be tasked with finding his next home as he looks to make up for lost time after a decade in Miami and get himself into the postseason.
Here are three possible landing spots that would make sense for both Jones and his potential new team.
Dallas Cowboys
Cap space: $73.9 million
Death, taxes and the Cowboys being attached to big name free agents. Dallas’ roster is very good and this team should bounce back from a disappointing 2019 season — but there is work to be done to ensure that happens. The team will sink a majority of their cap space into retaining QB Dak Prescott and WR Amari Cooper, which makes the ability to target veteran players for short-term deal important. Jones’ best chance to make a postseason run might come here; given the urgency of a new head coach and all of the talent still on the roster.
Cleveland Browns
Cap space: $65.3 million
The Browns have several bruisers in their secondary between Morgan Burnett and Sheldrick Redwine. With Damarious Randall entering free agency, the Browns do certainly have a void to be filled — and a healthy Reshad Jones is a better cover option in deep coverage versus either candidate. Jones would provide a similar physicality but also an upgraded ability in zone coverage.
Chicago Bears
Cap space: $24.4 million
The Bears have comfortably the least amount of cap space, but in the event that Jones doesn’t command a hot market, there’s a fair chance that a team like the Bears could be in play. Why? If Jones signed a one-year “prove it” deal for a playoff hungry team, Chicago would be a fit. Jones’ physical style of play would compliment FS Eddie Jackson on the back end of the defense and both strong safeties (Haha Clinton-Dix and Deon Bush) on the roster are not under contract for 2020.
