3 positions the Steelers can improve on defense the most in the offseason

(Winslow Townson/AP Images for Panini)

The focus for the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason is to do all they can to improve the defensive side of the football. This feels like a broken record as the Steelers’ defense has been in a state of flux for the past several seasons. Nevertheless, the Steelers really need to take multiple spots and look at ways to add production and athleticism. Here are the three positions on defense where the Steelers could make the biggest jump in 2019.

Dime defensive back/linebacker

At this point, it is hard to even call the Steelers a 3-4 defense. They, like most NFL teams, spend very little time in their base defense. With the surge in passing offense in the league, it has become even more important for teams to have players who can run and cover against the pass but still be physical enough to dissuade teams from running the football. Last season the Steelers tried multiple players at their dime backer, a hybrid between a safety and a linebacker. If Pittsburgh can fill another spot or two it could allow them to move last season’s first-round pick, Terrell Edmunds to fill this role.

Third outside linebacker

When we say third outside linebacker, it could actually mean the starting outside linebacker opposite T.J. Watt. Right now this spot is being held down by Bud Dupree but with his salary, his spot on the depth chart is tenuous. As of now the next-best guy on the roster is Anthony Chickillo and he brings very little in terms of the pass rush and an upgrade there. More consistent pressures up front would make the job of a struggling secondary easier.

Starting cornerback

We were all rooting for Artie Bruns. Even when he struggled mightily last season there was hope his athleticism would carry him while he got his mind right. But it hasn’t happened. Props to the front office for sticking by him and hoping he can turn things but the team still has to find a player to line up with Joe Haden at cornerback. The problem is everyone is looking to the draft but is there anyone who believes Pittsburgh can properly scout and pick a cornerback in the draft? This one may have to come via free agency.
