ATAMI, Shizuoka -- A total of three people have died from Saturday's enormous mudslide in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture, after the city reported Monday that a woman who was taken to a hospital had died.
The city also announced that of the 147 residents who have been missing, 34 were confirmed safe as of Monday morning.
Mud and debris still cover some areas, and 1,000 Self-Defense Forces personnel and police are searching for survivors.
According to the city, the woman was rescued Sunday from her home near the upper reaches of the Aizomegawa river, the source of the mudflow. She was in serious condition at the hospital on Sunday, but confirmed dead at 1:45 p.m. that day.
A total of 215 people from 127 households were affected by the mudslide, and the city checked an evacuee list and found that 113 are still missing.
Many vacation properties exist in the area, increasing the difficulty municipal officials are having determining whether anyone was in the dwellings at the time. The Shizuoka prefectural government has called on residents and cottage owners to provide information about their safety to local neighborhood community associations.
