Three chicks of Oriental stork, which is designated a specially protected species, have left their parents' nest in Tottori City. As of now, two of the three chicks have been seen catching food and practicing to fly around the nest.
The nesting pair laid the eggs around May 18 in the city in an artificial nesting tower built by Toshiyuki Tsubaki, according to the cultural assets division of the city's Board of Education. The three chicks began leaving the nest around July 16 to 23.
Currently, one of the chicks has not been seen around the nest, however, the remaining two frequently return to the nest in the evening and have been observed being fed by their parents.
"One of the chicks has likely already left its parents, but the other two will probably require more time," Tsubaki said.
"I'm relieved that they were able to safely leave the nest," an official of the board said. "I hope we can watch over them a little while longer before they leave their parents."
