3 offensive keys for a Titans victory vs. Eagles

The Tennessee Titans will travel to Philadelphia Thursday to open up their preseason schedule against the Eagles. This will be the first opportunity to for many fans to see the 2019 version of the Titans.

While the preseason is meaningless overall, the Titans would surely love to see a victory to kick things off.

Here are three things the Titans must do on the offensive side of the ball to pull off the win.

Control the clock

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

In this game, the old saying, “the best defense is a good offense” could hold true.

The Eagles are obviously a highly talented football team, and they have the potential to score on any given play. But if the Titans have the ball, they have less opportunity to put points on the scoreboard.

This means the Titans need to be efficient running the football, which is a huge component of their offense anyways.

A good run game is a team effort, so the offensive line will need to get a good push on defensive linemen and linebackers.

A solid ground game also gives the defense extra time to rest, which means they’ll hit the field fresh.

Avoid turnovers

While most turnovers are usually blamed on quarterbacks or the man committing the fumble, the Titans need to avoid mental error.

Staying turnover-free will require a conscious effort from every player on offense. Offensive linemen will need to give the quarterbacks enough time so as to stay comfortable in the pocket, and move enough defenders so that running backs aren’t bombarded in the backfield as soon as they take the hand off.

If the signal-callers can make good decisions in the pocket and the ball carries can take care of the football, the team can avoid costly mistakes.

Win the battle of field position

Winning the battle of field position involves all three phases of the game, but the offense will need to do their part.

The Eagles have always been a team that does well on special teams, but the Titans have also succeeded in this area recently.

The return men such as Darius Jennings, Adam Humphries, Jeremy McNichols also play a role in giving the Titans good field position in order to help the offense score.
