3 of Nottingham's most dangerous roads for drivers revealed

An interactive map has revealed the biggest accident blackspots in Nottinghamshire.

Three roads in the county have been identified as at the highest risk of a serious or fatal accident, according to data compiled by Ageas, in partnership with the Road Safety Foundation.

Roads around the county are categorised by their risk based on the amount of crashes there has been there - with the safest roads highlighted in green and the riskiest roads in black.

It was found that 1,445 fatal and serious accidents occurred in the county of Nottinghamshire between 2017 and 2019.

To put it into context, 1,183 of these crashes were recorded in the city of Nottingham during this time. Nationally, there were 35,374.

Ilkeston Road, which links Derby Road and Wollaton Road in Nottingham city centre, is listed at the highest risk level.

Nearby, Derby Road at its junction with Middleton Boulevard to its junction with Alfreton Road is also included under the highest level of road risk.

The final road deemed at the highest risk is at Hucknall Road between Carrington and Nottingham City Hospital.

Meanwhile Mansfield Road, running from the city centre to Redhill, is listed as at a persistently higher risk of a crash than other roads - as is nearby Lower and Upper Parliament Street, Huntingdon Street, Canal Street, Maid Marian Way the BBC Island, Glasshouse Street and Cranbrook Street.

By contrast, Woodhouse Way, which connects the Nottingham Belfrey hotel with the Nottingham Road roundabout, has been labelled one of the most improved roads for serious accidents, according to the map.

Ageas states on its website: "Some roads are much riskier than others.

"Driving on the recently formed Major Roads Network – important local ‘A’ roads managed by local authorities, for example, is four times riskier than driving on motorways.

"Nearly two-thirds (60%) of all road deaths occur on just one-eighth (12.5%) of the road network."
