SAN DIEGO _ Three people were missing and 15 were pulled from the water Saturday night after a fishing vessel caught fire 28 miles south of Point Loma, Coast Guard officials said.
The crew of the 42-foot fishing vessel Time Machine called the Coast Guard around 9:35 p.m. to report seeing a nearby fishing boat on fire and several people in the water.
Crew members from the fishing boat pulled 15 people from the water, including two who needed urgent medical attention.
The Coast Guard sent the cutter Haddock and a San Diego-based helicopter crew to assist in the rescue while the Mexican Navy deployed two defender class boats to assist.
The helicopter crew took the injured people to San Diego, where they were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The condition of those injured was not immediately available.
The remaining 13 survivors aboard the fishing vessel Time Machine were transferred to a Mexican Navy vessel and taken to Ensenada, Coast Guard officials said.
Mexican officials were overseeing the search.
