Three middle school students were hospitalized Thursday morning after lightning struck near a school bus stop in Round Lake Heights, Ill., where they standing, officials said.

The incident happened about 7:20 a.m. at Lotus Drive and Ottawa Drive in the far north suburb, about 45 miles north of downtown Chicago, according to Chief Greg Formica of the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District.

When responders arrived they found the three students on the ground. The students were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center. Two were in stable condition and one was in serious condition, Formica said.

Formica said other students were at the stop. Authorities planned to interview them to determine more information about how the three students were injured.

Formica said the area was hit by a brief rain shower that had cleared up an hour later.
