No bail for 3 charged in armed robbery, police shooting

May 03--Bail was denied Sunday for three men facing charges after one man was shot by police following two armed robberies allegedly committed by the group Friday.

Police said the men -- Terrence Hogan, Khalil Powell and Kamari Belmont -- robbed two groups of people at gunpoint early Friday.

Hogan remained hospitalized at the time of the bond hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.

About 2 a.m., the three robbed a 40-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman in the 3700 block of South Vincennes Avenue, police said. The woman turned over some of her possessions, but the man refused, leading Hogan to shoot the man in the groin and left kneecap, police said.

The 40-year-old was taken to Stroger Hospital, and his condition later stabilized, police said.

About 3:15 a.m., the group robbed a man at gunpoint near State Street and Cermak Road, police said. The three made off with a cellphone and wallet.

The man and his girlfriend flagged down officers after the robbery, said police and Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden. Using an app on the girlfriend's phone, police were able to track the three to the 500 block of West 43rd Street in the Canaryville neighborhood.

The officers found the men eating inside a sedan and approached the car with their weapons drawn, Camden said. Hogan then allegedly got out of the car, revealing a handgun in his waistband, and charged one of the officers. When Hogan hit the officer, the officer's gun accidentally discharged, hitting Hogan in the chest and shoulder, Camden said.

Hogan dropped his weapon and fled. A short time later, he showed up at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where he was taken into custody. Hogan was listed in serious condition as of Friday morning.

Powell and Belmont were both arrested in the 500 block of West 43rd Street after Hogan fled, police said.

Hogan, 21, of the 4200 block of South Ellis Avenue, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery, aggravated battery to a peace officer, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Powell, 19, of the 5100 block of South Loomis Street, was charged with two counts of armed robbery, and Belmont, 21, of the 7100 block of South Champlain Avenue, was also charged with two counts of armed robbery.
