3 killed, several injured as truck falls into gorge on Manali-Leh highway

MANALI: At least three people were killed while three others sustained serious injuries after a dumper truck they were travelling in rolled down into a deep gorge near Deepak Tal on the Manali-Leh highway on Wednesday.

According to sources, the truck of a contractor of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was coming from the Zingzingbar side towards Deepak Tal, below Baralacha pass, in Lahaul-Spiti district.

Six people, including the driver, were inside the cabin when the driver lost control over the vehicle and it rolled down into the deep valley. While the dumper body got stuck mid-way, the cabin kept rolling in the steep valley.

Indian Army, BRO jawans, police and people travelling on the highway came for help. The bodies and injured people were pulled out of the gorge after a lot of efforts.

Police said three people died on the spot while three others were brought up to the highway. The injured were shifted to the regional hospital at Keylong in an Army ambulance. The deceased and the injured were yet to be identified.

Police team had also rushed to the spot for further investigation.
