May 17--A man was found shot to death in a van on Interstate 57 on the Far South Side, among three people killed and 11 others wounded in gun violence in Chicago from Monday afternoon through early Tuesday.
The 37-year-old man was found around 8:35 p.m. after he crashed the van in the northbound lanes of the expressway near 108th Street, police said.
Witnesses told investigators they saw the man driving a silver van on South Hamlet Avenue near 110th Street, then heard gunshots, police said. The man drove onto the 111th Street ramp to the northbound lanes of I-57 and crashed, police said.
He had a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead on the scene.
Less than three hours later, a man was killed and two others were wounded in a Noble Square shooting around 11:10 p.m., police said. They were in the 1500 block of West Walton Street when someone walked up and fired shots, police said.
A 26-year-old man was shot in the chest and pronounced dead on the scene. A 19-year-old man was shot in the head, and a 20-year-old man was shot in the arm. They went to Stroger Hospital and were listed in serious condition.
The third fatal shooting occurred at 10:50 p.m. in Old Irving Park on the Northwest Side, police said. A 28-year-old man was shot in the 4300 block of North Elston Avenue in what a law enforcement source described as a narcotics-related shooting.
He ran across the street to the doorway of a Moroccan restaurant, where police found him unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Other shootings:
--About 3:25 a.m. Tuesday, a 19-year-old man was shot in the knee in the West Lawn neighborhood. He went to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. He told investigators he was shot in the 6200 block of South Komensky Avenue.
--At 2:35 a.m., a 35-year-old man was shot in the Near West Side neighborhood. He was in the 2100 block of West Adams Street when he was hit in the chest and taken to Stroger Hospital. He was listed in serious condition.
--At 1 a.m., a 24-year-old man was critically injured in a shooting in the Lathrop Homes neighborhood. Officers responding to the 2700 block of North Hoyne Avenue found him with gunshot wounds to the leg, arms, abdomen and groin. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.
--Also at 1 a.m., an 18-year-old man was shot in Back of the Yards. He was in a vehicle in the 4500 block of South Wolcott when he was shot in the shoulder and went to Mount Sinai Hospital.
--At 12:45 a.m., a 23-year-old man was shot in South Shore. He was in the 2000 block of East 71st Street when he was hit in the foot. He went to Jackson Park Hospital and his condition was stabilized.
--A 16-year-old girl was shot while riding her bike in Lawndale Monday evening. She was in the 1400 block of South Independence Boulevard about 7:20 p.m. when someone approached and fired shots, hitting her in the chest. The shooter fled on foot and the girl was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair condition.
--An hour earlier, a 15-year-old boy was shot in North Austin. He was in the 1600 block of North Monitor Avenue when a vehicle approached and someone inside fired shots. He was hit in the foot and went to West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, where he was listed in good condition.
--About 5:15 p.m., a 24-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 12200 block of South Emerald Avenue in the West Pullman neighborhood. He walked to MetroSouth Medical Center, according to Officer Michelle Tannehill, a police spokeswoman. His condition wasn't available.
--About 2 p.m., a 51-year-old man was shot in the chest in the 6700 block of South Green Street in Englewood. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized, police said.
