Feb. 24--Three men were hospitalized with minor injuries after a shooting on the campus of Bethune-Cookman University this evening.
Daytona Beach police were called to 649 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd. just before 6:40 p.m. The incident happened in a parking lot that separates the music building from the football team's practice field, university spokeswoman Beverly James said.
Two men have been detained by police. Their names have not been released, but James confirmed one of the men is a student at B-CU.
The names of the victims have not been released. James said each of the men was grazed by a bullet. One was hit on the ear, another on the arm and the third on the leg. One was taken to Halifax Health in an ambulance, but the other two victims were able to drive themselves to the hospital for medical care.
It's not clear what led to the shooting. But James said students, staff and parents should know that the campus is safe again.
"Our public-safety officers responded incredibly quickly and secured the campus," James said. "They made sure everyone was safe, the victims were taken care of and the Daytona Beach Police Department was notified.
"The students are safe. The campus is safe."
