‘3 Idiots’ Sequel in the Works: Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi Set to Return

A highly placed industry source confirms that the sequel is currently in the pre-production stage. Most notably, the original trio—Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi—are expected to reprise their roles, marking a reunion of the iconic “OG idiots.”

The original film, 3 Idiots, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, remains one of the most influential Hindi films of all time. A satirical take on the Indian education system, it also starred Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, Mona Singh, and Omi Vaidya.

Reports suggest that the sequel may feature a significant time jump, with the characters portrayed at a different stage of life compared to the original. Interestingly, there is ongoing uncertainty over whether the narrative will be set before or after the events of the first film. This detail is reportedly being kept under wraps.

There is also speculation about the title “4 Idiots” and the possible addition of actor Vicky Kaushal in a new “idiot” role, though these claims remain unconfirmed.

According to sources, Rajkumar Hirani is expected to return as director, further heightening anticipation among fans.

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots became a cultural phenomenon and a record-breaking box office success, grossing approximately ₹400 crore worldwide. It was the first Indian film to cross the ₹400-crore milestone and went on to achieve exceptional international success, including outperforming Avatar in China during its run. Over the years, it has continued to be regarded as one of the most impactful Indian films of the 21st century.

With the core team reportedly reuniting, expectations for the sequel are already running high, even as official confirmation on several key details remains awaited.
