3 from Shamli arrested in Pakistan with pistols ‘part of smuggling racket’

SHAMLI: After 70-year-old man Nafees Ahmad, his wife Aamna and 35-year-old son Mohd Kaleem – residents of Nokua Mohalla in Shamli -- were arrested at Wagah border by Pakistani authorities on Wednesday for carrying pistols illegally, an intelligence officer said, on condition of anonymity, that they could be part of ‘kabootarbazi’, a term used for smuggling of goods using travellers.

The Shamli police on Friday found their house locked, as other family members have gone underground. Top officials of Shamli police have refused to reveal further details.

The three had gone to Pakistan a month ago to visit relatives. The couple has five sons. As per their neighbour Naseem Ahmad, Nafees is a hawker. Another neighbour said other family members living in the house had gone somewhere soon after getting the news of Nafees’s arrest.
