One Canadian Football League team is now loaded with former Jets.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have three ex-Jets on their defensive line alone: Lorenzo Mauldin, Jamaal Westerman and Julian Howsare. All three didn’t last very long in New York, but they could find a way to resurrect their careers in Canada.
Mauldin signed with Hamilton in April after playing in the Spring League earlier this year. He spent the past three seasons in New York after the Jets took him in the third round of the 2015 draft out of Louisville. Mauldin totaled 26 combined tackles and 6.5 sacks in 26 games for the Jets, but a back injury before the 2017 season derailed his career, and he was cut in 2018.
Westerman started his career in New York after going undrafted out of Rutgers in 2009. He became a solid reserve linebacker in Rex Ryan’s defense for three years and he tallied 49 tackles and 6.5 sacks. Westerman hopped around the NFL until 2015, when he signed with the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers and recorded 17 sacks in his first season. In 2018, he was traded from Montreal Alouettes to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as part of the Johnny Manziel trade.
Howsare had the shortest stint among the three. He went undrafted out of Clarion in 2015 as a fullback/defensive end and only saw two games of action in his NFL career as a special teams player. Howsare spent time on the Jets practice squad in 2015 and 2017.
