Having good players is only part of the battle when it comes to winning games in EA FC 25‘s Ultimate Team mode. You also need to understand your players and find the best formation and tactics for the roster you choose to field. I’m here to help you do just that. Let’s take a look at some of the best formations you can use to win more games.
Understanding Formations And Tactics
Before we dive into which formations are the best, let’s discuss why different formations are useful. Aside from just introducing different strategies, different formations include different positions. For example, in the default 4-4-2 formation, our team will include an RB, an LB, two CBs, an RM, an LM, two CMs, two STs, and of course a GK. While we can, of course, play a CAM or CDM as a CM, or an RW as an RM, we would rather play our characters in their natural positions if possible.
Once you’re ready to look at the formations and see what suits you best, head over to your squad menu and press in your left thumbstick. This will bring up the menu where you can find your team’s formations. Let’s take a look at the best options in the current meta.
The Best Formations For Ultimate Team
4-4-2 Formation

The default option for formation in Ultimate Team is actually quite good. It offers a balanced approach to the game with four midfielders that can help press the attack or fall back and defend. We can choose to have our midfielders attack when we want to play aggressively, and have them hold or defend when we want to play more defensively. I usually run balanced tactics here and set my left and right backs to the “full back” option.
4-2-3-1 (2) Formation

If you have a lot of good midfielders, 4-2-3-1 Wide has been a staple in Ultimate Team and is always a great option. Instead of using two CMs and two STs like 4-4-2, this formation uses two CDMs, one CAM, and one ST. This offers a more defensive approach that is still capable of putting together a strong attack. For tactics, I recommend going with a balanced build-up and balanced defensive approach. This formation does quite well with default tactics.
4-3-3 (3) Formation

4-4-3 was not as popular earlier in EA FC 25’s lifespan, but it gets better and better as better wingers become available. This is an aggressive formation that makes use of two wingers along with a central ST, but still utilizes two CDMs for some additional defensive help. For tactics, I use balanced across the board again, and stick with the default position tactics.
While these are my three favorite formations at the time of writing, I have also tried 4-5-1, 4-4-1-1, and 4-2-2-2, which have all historically been good in Ultimate Team. Keep in mind that as updates and new players come out, different formations and tactics will go in and out of style.
