3 drivers taken to hospital after serious M1 crash caused hours of delays

Three drivers were taken to hospital following a crash which closed the M1, caused hours of delays and needed the air ambulance to land.

The crash happened northbound on the motorway between junctions 28 for Sutton-in-Ashfield and junction 29 for Mansfield at 1.25pm on July 7 - causing tailbacks stretching five miles.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix confirmed at the time that traffic was halted on the northbound carriageway and that the motorway was closed.

Highways England then announced the five mile queue and delays of up to 90 minutes for drivers - with diversion routes through Mansfield and Ashfield also causing disruption on town roads.

Derbyshire Constabulary confirmed a lorry driver and two car drivers, all men, were taken to hospital.

The lorry driver was taken to hospital in Sheffield in the air ambulance. Police said his condition is unknown at this time.

Two other drivers were taken to hospital in Chesterfield in an ambulance. Police confirmed their injuries were believed to be minor.

The road was then reopened by Highways England at around 7pm - almost six hours after the initial crash took place.
