Three people were killed when a corporate jet crashed in southern Indiana Friday morning, authorities said.
Officials were alerted to the crash shortly before 11:30 a.m. by residents living near Memphis, Ind., according to a press release from Indiana State Police. Officers from the Clark County Sheriff's Office responded to a wooded area, where they discovered flaming debris from the crash.
A Ball State University trustee member, architect R. Wayne Estopinal, was among the victims, the university confirmed.
The Clark County Airport, in Sellersburg, confirmed that a Cessna Citation was flying to Chicago Midway Airport around 11:24 a.m.
The three victims, including the pilot, were on the plane when it spiraled downward moments after takeoff. A few large pieces of the plane remained intact, said Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel.
Weather is not believed to have been a factor in the crash. National Weather Service meteorologist Ryan Sharp said there was no rain in the area and winds were light with low clouds.
