3 defensive keys to victory for Titans vs. Broncos

The Tennessee Titans (2-3) travel to Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday in hopes of evening out their record against the Denver Broncos (1-4).

The Broncos hadn’t won a contest all season until last week, when they defeated the Los Angeles Chargers, 20-13 on the road. Now, they aim to stay hot as they return home.

Here are three things the Titans must do on the defensive side of the ball to get the win.

1. Force three-and-outs.

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

One of the biggest advantages the Broncos have in any game is playing on their own turf. Due to the altitude, the air is much thinner than most teams are accustomed to — including the Titans.

The Titans defense will need to force three-and-outs to keep the offense on the field to score points and keep themselves fresh.

2. No missed tackles.

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

The Broncos have several players who are capable of catching a short pass and taking it to the house.

Courtland Sutton is a big wide receiver with a similar skill set to the Titans’ Corey Davis. Phillip Lindsey is one of the league’s better receiving backs, and even made a Pro Bowl last year. Emmanuel Sanders is a speedy wideout, similar to a running back when the ball is in his hands.

To prevent big plays, the Titans defense will need to wrap up and bring the ball carrier to the ground on first contact.

3. Attack the young players.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The Broncos have a second-year player in Garrett Bolles starting at left tackle, and rookie Dalton Risner starting at left guard.

The Titans need to take advantage of this and confuse these young players. Disguising the defense, and making them guess who is coming and where they’re coming from will be important. Making them think should also make them lose a step.

This is also quarterback Joe Flacco’s blind side, which means the Titans edge rushers could be in for a big game.
