3 dead, 2 injured in fire and police shooting near Baltimore

BALTIMORE – Three people were killed, two were injured and another two missing people have been accounted for after a fire and a police shooting in a townhouse neighborhood in Woodlawn Saturday morning, Baltimore County police said.

Neighbors called 911 to report the fire and an armed man in the 7300 block of Maury Road, and officers and firefighters arrived together about 6:40 a.m. to find the man outside the burning homes, county police spokeswoman Joy Stewart said.

“That threat was neutralized,” Stewart said Saturday at the scene. “At that point, firefighters were able to address the fire.”

The name of the man who was killed by police was not released Saturday, nor were any details on the other people killed and injured in the incident. The officer or officers who shot the man also were not immediately identified.

Of the two people injured, one was in critical condition and the other’s injuries were not life threatening, police said. Two people who had been unaccounted for were located, and firefighters and police are still searching the scene.

Tim Rostkowski, a county fire department spokesman, said the 2-alarm blaze collapsed two houses and damaged a third. Neighbors reported people potentially inside, but firefighters’ entry was hindered by the collapses and the wait for the utility company to shut off a gas main, he said Saturday.
