3 dead, 18 wounded in Chicago shootings Thursday, early Friday

CHICAGO _ The two cousins were waiting in the lobby of their South Side apartment for a GrubHub delivery of chicken wings early Friday when a barrage of gunfire sent them scrambling up the stairs.

"When we made it back upstairs, the gunshots were still going. More came," said one of the cousins, 21, who did not give his name. "We looked out the window. I see one dude, I see his whole pants are red. He had white pants on."

Chicago police said two men were shot outside the Washington Park apartment building about 1:40 a.m. Friday as pedestrians were caught in the crossfire of an apparent shootout between two cars. One of the cars, a black Ford sedan, slammed into the apartment building. The occupants ditched the car, its windshield cracked by at least six bullet holes.

The wounded _ a 24-year-old man shot in the arm and a 22-year-old shot in the leg _ were taken to Stroger Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized.

The cousins said they led the men inside their lobby and brought chairs for them as they waited for an ambulance to arrive. Splatters of blood on the sidewalk traced the route they took.
