
The three-day Labor Thanksgiving Day weekend kicked off on Saturday amid a sharp rise in novel coronavirus infections. At train stations and vacation spots throughout Japan, people were seen doing their best to enjoy sightseeing while also complying with infection prevention measures.
Families lined up on a Shinkansen platform at JR Tokyo Station, wearing masks and carrying large bags.
An office worker from Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, who was headed to Sendai with her daughter to watch a J-League soccer game, said, "I'm worried about the increasing number of infected people nationwide, but I want to cheer for my team while frequently cleansing my hands with the disinfectant I brought with me."
A woman from Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, who was headed toward Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture with her family, said she had plans to enjoy a one-night stay in a cottage using the "Go To Travel" tourism promotion campaign. She added that she wanted to spend time alone with her family in nature and have as little contact with other people as possible.
