3 cops held in Pune for robbery had left headquarters sans nod; inquiry ordered

PUNE: Deputy commissioner of police (DCP-zone III) Pournima Gaikwad has ordered an inquiry into the act of three constables from Dattawadi police station, arrested on Saturday in a robbery case in Thane, leaving the city police headquarters (HQ) limits without permission from a competent authority.

A senior city police officer, who did not wish to be named, told TOI, “These provisions in the State Police Manual are aimed at ensuring smooth functioning of police work vis-à-vis law and order. It provides for action in case of any violation.”

The officer explained, “In this case, constables Ganesh Balasaheb Shinde (35), Ganesh Maruti Kamble (34) and Dilip Maruti Pilane (32) left the HQ jurisdiction on March 7 without taking permission from the competent senior officer. Moreover, the Thane police told us that the three policemen were in uniform when they committed the alleged robbery.”

“On March 8, one of these constables was on sick leave, the other one had taken an off, and the third one had availed of a compensatory off for having worked on a VVIP bandobast duty on his regular weekly off day. But, even if they were on leave, it was their duty to inform their seniors if they were leaving the police HQ area,” the officer said.

The alleged robbery took place on March 8; the trio was arrested on March 12.
