
OSAKA -- Thee people have been confirmed dead after a magnitude-6.1 earthquake struck Osaka and neighboring prefectures at 7:58 a.m. on Monday.
A 9-year-old girl died at Juei Elementary School in Takatasuki, Osaka Prefecture, after the wall of a swimming pool complex collapsed, according to the Osaka prefectural police and other sources.
Two men in their 80s, one from Osaka's Higashiyodogawa Ward, and another from the city of Ibaraki also perished. One of the men died after being buried under a collapsed building. Many injuries were also reported.
A lower 6 on the 7-tier Japanese seismic intensity scale was recorded in Kita Ward, Osaka city, as well as in the municipalities of Takatsuki, Hirakata, Ibaraki and Minoo in the same prefecture.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake's epicenter was in northern Osaka Prefecture and occurred at a depth of about 13 kilometers.
Seismic activity of upper 5 was recorded in Osaka city's Higashiyodogawa Ward and the municipalities of Toyonaka, Suita, Neyagawa and Settsu in the prefecture, as well as in Kyoto.
