3 Chiefs players scheduled for surgery per Rick Burkholder

The Kansas City Chiefs have three players scheduled for surgery according to Head Athletic Trainer Rick Burkholder.

Burkholder broke down some of the latest injury updates for the Chiefs today ahead of media availability. He provided updates on two injured players from the preseason Week 2 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

First was Marcus Kemp who suffered a torn ACL and MCL. Kemp is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow with Dr. Dan Cooper in Dallas. Cooper is one of the top orthopedic knee surgeons, so Kemp will be in good care.

Burkholder was able to give us a more meaningful update on Speaks than we’d heard thus far. Speaks is dealing with an MCL sprain and a meniscal injury in his right knee. The injury will require surgery, which will also happen tomorrow in Houston with Dr. Walter Lowe.

He also revealed the severity of a new injury suffered against the 49ers. Chad Henne has a right high ankle sprain and also a fracture in that same ankle which will require surgery. Henne is scheduled for surgery tomorrow with Dr. Robert Anderson in Green Bay.

Burkholder did not take any questions following his update and said that Andy Reid would provide some more information when he speaks to the media on Tuesday.

The big questions will be about Speaks and Henne and how long they’re both expected to be out. It looks like it could potentially be season-ending for Henne, but without more information on the injuries to both Henne and Speaks, it’s hard to say for certain.

It appears the Chiefs will be looking for more depth behind Patrick Mahomes and along the defensive line at least in the interim.
