3 charged in Old Town slaying

Nov. 18--Three men have been charged in a weekend slaying in the Old Town neighborhood, police announced late Monday.

Eddie Robert Simmons, 21, Ahmed Marinez Walker, 18, and Matthew Cobbs, 20, have each been charged with first-degree murder in the killing about 3:15 a.m. Sunday in the 400 block of West Evergreen Avenue, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office said the man was identified as Nacurvie Smith, 27, of the 1200 block of North Cleveland Avenue. He died of a gunshot wound to the arm, the office determined following an autopsy.

The man was found in a vehicle in the 400 block of West Evergreen Avenue with multiple gunshot wounds, Alfaro said. The car he was in had crashed into several parked cars before coming to a stop.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:53 a.m., accordign to the medical examiner's office.

A vehicle was reported leaving the scene, police said. Soon after the incident, police stopped the suspects on the Eisenhower Expressway and took them into custody, police said.

Simmons, of the 3400 block West Fifth Avenue, Walker, of the 700 Block of West 50th Place, and Cobbs, of the 2700 block of North Francisco Avenue, were due to appear in court on Tuesday.
