3 best sci-fi movies on Prime Video you (probably) haven't seen

Prime Video logo on blue electric currents background.

Scroll through Prime Video’s sci-fi section and you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve seen it all. The same few heavy hitters dominate every "best of" row, creating a loop of familiar faces. But tucked behind those blockbusters sits a "Wild West" lineup of films that rarely get a shout-out; the algorithm won't surface them on its own, so you have to be willing to seek them out yourself.

The payoff is well worth the effort. In the shadows of the mainstream, you’ll find a wealth of stories firmly rooted in science fiction that are far too daring to land on a typical beginner's guide. After all, who wants to watch the same recycled tropes every night?

If your watchlist is starting to feel like a rerun, consider this your nudge to wander off the beaten path. These five sci-fi movies on Prime Video serve as a perfect entry point — each one underseen, underappreciated and well worth a couple hours of your time.

'12 Monkeys'

James Cole (Bruce Willis) is a convict living in a desolate, underground future where a virus has wiped out most of humanity. "Volunteered" for a dangerous mission, Cole is sent back in time to gather intel on the outbreak's origins — a journey that lands him in a psychiatric hospital where his claims are dismissed as delusions. While working with Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe), he crosses paths with the unhinged Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt) and begins to doubt his own sanity. Is he really a traveler from a ruined future, or is the whole thing an elaborate fantasy?

'The Vast of Night'

One evening in 1950s New Mexico, the town of Cayuga has turned out for a high school basketball game, leaving switchboard operator Fay Crocker (Sierra McCormick) and radio DJ Everett Sloan (Jake Horowitz) to work the graveyard shift. When a strange audio frequency begins bleeding through their equipment, the two set out to chase the signal through phone lines, tape recordings, and the eerie memories of locals. As they piece together the source of the broadcast, they must solve the mystery before it consumes their town — and their lives.

'Synchronicity'

Jim Beale (Chad McKnight) is a physicist on the verge of a breakthrough: a machine capable of punching a wormhole through space and time. When his experiment produces a mysterious dahlia that appears to have traveled backward from the future, Jim's reality begins to fracture. His discovery leads him to Abby (Brianne Davis), a stranger whose ties to his investor raise more questions than answers. To protect his invention and uncover the truth, Jim must eventually step through the machine himself, retracing his own steps to solve a puzzle he hasn't even finished yet.
