3 Arsenal youngsters to look out for in Papa John's Trophy tie with Ipswich

Arsenal 's youngsters are out to reach the third round of the EFL Trophy for the first time.

But standing in their way on Wednesday night is a stern-looking test. Ipswich Town had a poor start to life in League One this season.

But Paul Cook's side have slowly found their feet and will be looking for a morale-boosting cup win to continue their upward momentum.

Ipswich won their group whilst Kevin Betsy's young Gunners finished runners-up.

Ahead of the clash at Portman Road, here are three Arsenal youngsters to keep an eye out for.

Charlie Patino

Highly-rated youngster Patino has been tipped for a first team debut very soon.

An ankle injury sidelined him recently but he's now back and featuring for the under-23s. Mikel Arteta resisted the urge to blood Patino in the earlier rounds of the Carabao Cup but he could potentially get an outing when Sunderland visit the Emirates later this month.

First though, he'll be looking to impress here and help the young Gunners reach the last-16 of another competition.

Folarin Balogun

Balogun has been in superb form in the Premier League 2 competition this term.

He's notched 14 so far, including a hat-trick in last Friday's pulsating game with Derby which they somehow lost 5-3.

He's actually scored in his last five games in the competition and even scored in the EFL Trophy clash with Plymouth last time out.

The 20-year-old will be hoping to show off his goalscoring talents again at Portman Road as he look to continue banging at the first-team door.

Mika Bierith

Biereth arrived at Arsenal on a free in the summer after leaving Fulham.

And the Swedish striker has impressed so far, notching five times in Premier League 2.

He's also been a prominent feature in the EFL Trophy games, featuring in two of the three group games so far.

Such is his progression recently that he was said to have been asked to train with Arteta's first team.

Fresh rules added

The second round of the EFL Trophy has seen new rules implemented. Teams are now permitted to make five substitutions from the seven they nominate for the remainder of the 2021/22 competition.

All 16 second round clashes will go straight to penalties if they are level after 90 minutes.

The 16 winning teams will remain split regionally for round three, but will be unseeded.

The third round draw is scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 4.
