3 arrested, drugs and military-style weapons seized in standoff

Jan. 22--Three people barricaded themselves in a San Bernardino home where there were high-powered weapons and methamphetamine, spurring an hours-long SWAT standoff.

A woman and two men were arrested on suspicion of drugs and narcotics violations Thursday morning after the standoff with police, which led to a neighborhood evacuation, Fontana police said.

The three barricaded themselves inside a home in the 1200 block of West 17th Street, said spokeswoman Martha Guzman-Hurtado. Members of the Inland Valley SWAT arrived at the home about 5 a.m. with a high-risk warrant after Fontana police received information that 20-year-old Jorge Alvarez had high-powered weapons, she said. He was one of the two men arrested.

Because the situation had the potential to become volatile, police evacuated 10 homes in the neighborhood.

Police tried to enter the home, but residents did not cooperate or comply with orders, Guzman-Hurtado said.

During the standoff, the homeowner exited the residence and began driving away before police pulled him over. He told them that six people between the ages of 15 and 75 were inside the home.

Four hours later, the men and woman surrendered.

Once inside, police searched the home and found methamphetamine and military-style weapons, she said.
