If you’re shopping on Amazon to help fill in your retirement dream home, you can find all sorts of gadgets that may not seem like a big upgrade at first glance, but you can quickly find that they make taking care of your home and enjoying your retirement more attainable.
Electric Bathroom Scrubber
First, consider a tool that can simplify cleaning your bathroom, especially as you age and perhaps confront the reality of not being as nimble as you once were.
“Seniors should prioritize making home upkeep as easy and efficient as possible. One of my top recommendations is an electric bathroom scrubber. These rechargeable tools come with extendable handles and interchangeable cleaning heads, so there’s no need to bend over or strain to scrub the bottom of a tub or shower,” said Melissa Cid, consumer savings expert at MySavings.com.
She recommends this electric spin scrubber, which costs only $19.99 and features versatile attachments.

Cordless Vacuum
Similar to the benefits of an electric bathroom scrubber, Cid also recommends getting a cordless vacuum. Here, though, you might want to spring for a name-brand model.
“For easy, low-effort cleaning, I recommend a Bissell cordless vacuum for quick touch-ups,” she said, such as the Bissell 3061 featherweight cordless stick vacuum, ringing in at $128.74.
Robot Vacuum
While a cordless vacuum can be useful for quick jobs, such as cleaning up dirt tracked into an entryway, adding a robot vacuum can cover more of the regular work.
Use “a robot vacuum like the Shark AI Ultra Voice Control Robot Vacuum for daily maintenance that can be scheduled easily with an app or activated with your voice,” said Cid.
This is a bigger purchase, with Cid’s recommended Shark model currently on sale for $297.99, but the convenience is often worth it, especially in retirement when you don’t necessarily want to be getting into every nook and cranny with a handheld vacuum.
Skip the Low-Grade Furniture
While the aforementioned cleaning products can make taking care of your retirement home less stressful, think twice before filling it with bargain furniture. That’s not to say you can never find good pieces of furniture on Amazon, but there’s a lot of coal mixed in with the diamonds.
“In retirement, invest in sturdy furniture built to last. Avoid cheap Amazon pieces that require self-assembly, as they often lack the safety and stability of quality furniture,” said Cid.
