3,684 new Covid cases, 26 more deaths

There were 26 more Covid-19 fatalities and 3,684 new cases registered during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry said on Thursday morning.

There were 3,540 cases in the general population and 144 among prison inmates.

This compared with 29 coronavirus-related fatalities and 3,370 new cases reported on Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday, 4,531 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the coronavirus.

Since the pandemic started early last year, there have been 2,181,960 Covid-19 cases, with 2,115,232 complete recoveries so far.

The vast majority of the Covid cases and deaths have occurred since April 1, around when the third wave of Covid-19 began.

The death toll stood at 21,192 during the third wave and 21,286 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The kingdom's 24-hour high of Covid-19 fatalities was 312 recorded on Aug 13. The highest number of cases was 23,418 on Aug 13.

Dr Wichan Pawan, director of the Division of Communicable Diseases said on Thursday afternoon that the 26 new fatalities were between the ages of 35 and 98 years old.

Bangkok logged two new deaths while two others were reported in the adjacent provinces of Samut Prakan and Samut Sakhon.

Other central plain provinces further from the capital recorded five more deaths - in Sing Buri (2), Prachin Buri (1), Suphan Buri (1) and Ayutthaya (1).

The Northeast had seven new fatalities in Nakhon Ratchasima (2), Ubon Ratchathani (2), Roi Et (1), Si Sa Ket (1) and Nong Bua Lam Phu (1).

The South reported 10 more deaths - Songkhla (5), Chumphon (2), Phatthalung (2) and Krabi (1).

The 3,684 new cases included 3,519 local infections and 21 imported cases.

Of the local infections, 3,161 were confirmed at hospitals and 78 via mass testing.

“New infections are in their downtrend,” Dr Wicharn said.

Bangkok had 572 new cases, followed by 289 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 166 in Samut Prakan, 160 in Chon Buri, 105 in Songkhla, 99 in Khon Kaen, 96 in Surat Thani, 90 in Ayutthaya, 89 in Nakhon Sawan and 81 in Tak.

The 21 imported cases were from Vietnam (2), Austria (1), South Sudan (1), Cambodia (1), the United Arab Emirates (1), the United States (2), Saudi Arabia (5), the United Kingdom (2), Australia (1), Hungary (1), Kuwait (1) and Russia (3).

On Wednesday 45,442 people received Covid-19 treatment at hospitals (down from 46,315 on the previous day), including 1,000 seriously ill patients (down from 1,018) and 272 dependent on ventilators (down from 277).

Global Covid-19 cases rose by 707,768 in 24 hours to 272.46 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 7,822 to 5.34 million. The US had the most cases at 51.29 million, up 136,590, and the most deaths at 823,390, up 1,690.
