
A total of 3,241 houses were flooded in Chiba, Fukushima, Gunma and three other prefectures by record rainfall stemming from Typhoon No. 21 and an accompanying low pressure system, it has been learned.
Some areas had already been hit hard by Typhoon No. 19, which made landfall on Oct. 12. The reported damage is expected to further increase following full-scale inspections of houses and buildings, which started Monday as the flood waters receded.
As of 10 a.m. Monday, there were 10 reported deaths and two others were missing due to the heavy rain that drenched the region on Friday. According to figures supplied by affected municipalities, a total of 3,390 buildings suffered damage across seven prefectures, including Metropolitan Tokyo.
In Chiba Prefecture, the hardest hit among the affected prefectures, 717 buildings were flooded in the city of Mobara, which saw its central district submerged. The city has only begun the inspection process.
Similarly, the city of Sakura, where flood waters in residential areas only receded Sunday, has not yet made an assessment in terms of numbers, and the full extent of the damage remains unknown.
