A total of 3,178 typhoon survivors remained unable to return their homes as of 5 p.m. on Saturday, three weeks after Typhoon No. 19 landed with devastating force.
The number of casualties from the disaster has reached 89 in Tokyo and 12 other prefectures after a 69-year-old company employee from Fukushima was found dead in a paddy field in Kawauchi, Fukushima Prefecture. A total of seven people are still missing in four prefectures, according to information The Yomiuri Shimbun has gathered.
The powerful typhoon, which crossed the eastern part of the country, damaged or destroyed 8,067 homes, while about 67,000 houses were flooded, either above or below the floor level.
Damage caused to the nation's agriculture, forestry and fisheries industries by the typhoon reached 167.9 billion yen, according to the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry.
There are some areas that suffered damage anew caused by the subsequent Typhoon No. 21 and torrential rainfall caused by a low-pressure system.
