2nd teen charged in killing of mom of 3 is held without bail

March 14--The second of two teenagers accused of killing a 30-year-old mother of three in the Wentworth Gardens neighborhood last month was ordered held without bail Sunday.

Natrell Jackson, 18, is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Shari Graham as she sat in the back of a cab in the 3800 block of South Princeton Avenue on Feb. 26. Graham and her boyfriend had taken a cab to the area to pick up food, authorities said.

Jackson stood impassively during the brief hearing, holding his hands behind his back to hold up his baggy jeans.

A Cook County judge had denied bail on Saturday to Michael Whitehead, 16, the other teen accused in the shooting.

Jackson and Whitehead fired a total of 12 shots in the direction of a vehicle, thought to be carrying rival gang members, instead striking Graham in the back, prosecutors said.

The cabdriver drove Graham about two miles away. From there, paramedics took her to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Chicago Housing Authority surveillance video captured the shooting, officials said. An officer spotted Jackson walking near the Wentworth Gardens Homes and arrested him, according to court files.

Judge Laura Sullivan denied bail Sunday, calling Jackson a significant threat to the community.

Jackson, of the 100 block of East 59th Street, is on parole for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and reckless discharge of a firearm, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections. Records show he was placed on parole Feb. 11, two weeks before Graham was killed.

Prosecutors also said Jackson was on juvenile probation. The details of that case were not available.
