2nd man charged in May slaying over dice game

Dec. 29--A second man has been charged for his role in a May homicide that resulted after the alleged shooters accused others of cheating during a dice game, officials said.

A warrant was issued in September for Emmanuel Harvey, 23, of Dubuque, Iowa and he appeared at the Leighton Criminal Court building on Tuesday before Judge Adam Bourgeouis Jr. who ordered him held without bail.

In addition to Harvey, Garland Benson, 26, is charged with the May 14 slaying of Alvin Randolph, 19.

Prosecutors said Tuesday that the dice game happened on May 13 and that during the dispute Harvey was armed with a shovel and used it to repeatedly strike another person and break that person's wrist. The conflict ended after the people left Harvey and the other members of Harvey and Benson's group.

The next day on May 14, Benson, Harvey and several others planned to shoot the man Benson and Harvey accused of cheating at his home in the 6400 block of South Damen Avenue, prosecutors said.

About 7:20 p.m., Harvey and Benson walked over to the Damen address with a van with three other people following along, prosecutors said.

At the time Benson went up to the house, a man was on the porch with family members and a friend who had tried to mediate was in the area, said prosecutors. While the group was going up to the house, Randolph walked up to the scene with a golf club in his hand and a tried to quell the dispute, prosecutors said.

Benson and Harvey then began shooting at the man they accused of cheating and his family and Randolph. They were joined by two other people who were with Harvey and Benson and who then joined in the shooting, prosecutors said.

Randolph suffered gunshot wounds to the back of the head and the leg and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police recovered 24 spent shell casings at the scene, prosecutors said.

Police confiscated two load guns, a .380-caliber handgun with 7 live rounds and 9mm pistol with 5 live rounds.

Harvey returned to Iowa where his attorney said he had been living for several years and was arrested. His lawyer said Harvey works at an Oral B Factory in Iowa City making toothbrushes.

Benson, of the 6400 block of South Seeley Avenue, was paroled July 28, 2014, in an aggravated unlawful use of a weapon case that originated with his arrest Aug. 13, 2013, two blocks north of his home, according to Illinois Department of Corrections and court records.

Benson is also being held without bail.
