
LOS ANGELES -- A live album by Snarky Puppy, whose members include Japanese percussionist Keita Ogawa, won best contemporary instrumental album at the 63rd Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.
"Live at the Royal Albert Hall" was recorded live in London in 2019.
Ogawa, 38, joined the U.S. instrumental ensemble about 10 years ago, and also took part in the recording of another album by that group that won a Grammy in the same category in 2017. The ensemble currently has about 20 members and is popular for its lively sounds with elements from jazz, funk and world music.
Ogawa comes from Nagasaki Prefecture and went to the United States in 2005. After studying at the Berklee College of Music, he settled in New York as the base for his musical activities. He has demonstrated his skills in various works.
In Japan, he is known in for participating in albums by many Japanese artists, including actress-singer Tomoyo Harada.
"Every one of the members and the staff of Snarky Puppy is great. I'm glad that I could win this award as a member of this team," Ogawa told The Yomiuri Shimbun after the award was announced.
