A second teenager has died after being pulled from Lake Michigan last week in northwest Indiana.
Yousef Saleh, 18, was among several people pulled from the Portage Lakefront Aug. 16, according to Porter County Deputy Coroner Kristi Chervenak. He died Aug. 21 from his injuries.
Five swimmers struggled that day during strong rip currents near the Portage Riverwalk, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources has said. Saleh was among four rescued, but a 16-year-old remained missing.
Mohamed Obied, also of Bridgeview, was recovered the next morning and pronounced dead.
The day of the drowning, the National Weather Service issued a swim risk warning in Indiana due to waves estimated at three-to-six feet tall.
Thirty-six people have drowned in Lake Michigan this year, according to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, which tracks drownings.
