£2m plan for new holiday lodges in part of Nottinghamshire

Plans have been revealed to build more than 20 holiday lodges on vacant farmland in part of Nottinghamshire.

The £2m development is earmarked for a 20-acre site off Ilkeston Road and the lodges are designed to include kitchen facilities.

Years ago a number of railway cottages used to occupy the land and the plans for the new complex have been submitted by William May Developments. Director Ian Jowett, 46, said it could create "the first holiday lodges in the area".

He said: "They vary in size from one-bedroom to two-bedroom with a living, kitchen and an outdoor balcony area looking over the fields.

"It's got the River Erewash running through the site. It links into the canal which is part of the Erewash Valley Trail."

Plans have been tabled for 26 lodges and a reception area is in the pipeline.

Mr Jowett said the development "should bring some money to the local economy" and reuse land "instead of it just being a vacant farm field".

Around 30 jobs are expected to be created through the construction phase with further roles in the pipeline once the site is up and running.

A planning application has been submitted to Broxtowe Borough Council to open the facility.

Mr Jowett said the project promised "peace and quiet" with "good access", adding: "I'm expecting it to take off."

Plans, submitted as part of the application, read: "Historically the site accommodated Trowell Forge and 14 dwellings, these have long since been demolished with only the access road, building platforms and tramway embankment at the Forge remaining."

The Forge was built in the 1870s, between the River Erewash and the Erewash Valley Railway Line.

The site is accessed off the A609.

A spokeswoman for the council confirmed the application had been received.

She said a decision on the plans was due to be made by August 21.

According to the proposals, up to 28 car parking spaces are in mind to serve the site.

It comes after a luxury camping site opened last year at a farm in Stapleford, elsewhere in Broxtowe.
