29-year-old man arrested in assault on transgender woman in Dallas, police say

DALLAS _ Dallas police have charged a man who is accused of attacking a transgender woman Friday with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.

Edward Thomas, 29, was arrested about 9:30 p.m. Sunday in connection with "his role in the aggravated assault" that was recorded on video, police said.

Police have indicated the case is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

The victim had been driving between 5 and 6 p.m. Friday at the Royal Crest Apartments in the east Oak Cliff neighborhood when she was involved in a minor traffic accident. A man began to beat her during an argument about the accident and several other people joined in, police said.

Video of the incident, which was posted on social media, shows a man punching the woman while other people start to kick her.

A group of women carried the victim from the fight at the end of the video. Witnesses took her to UT Southwestern Medical Center, where she spoke to officers and said homophobic slurs were used during the assault, police said.

The victim was identified by her family as 23-year-old Muhlaysia Booker, according to KXAS-TV.

Police did not provide additional information about whether other arrests may be made.

He was being held in the Dallas County Jail on Monday morning, and bail had not been set yet.
