Democratic socialist Melat Kiros secured a major upset victory in Colorado's Democratic primary, defeating nearly 30-year incumbent U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette.
Kiros, a 29-year-old lawyer and doctoral student, is the latest progressive challenger to unseat a long-serving Democratic incumbent, reflecting a broader movement within the party.
Due to the heavily Democratic nature of Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, Kiros is widely anticipated to win the general election in November.
Her campaign platform included expanding government-backed healthcare, abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, confronting President Donald Trump, and advocating for an end to the war in Gaza.
This victory underscores the growing influence of the progressive wing within the Democratic Party, as similar challenges to established leadership continue across the country.
