27 PMF Members Killed in Ambush in Iraq’s Kirkuk

At least 20 PMF members were killed in a Kirkuk ambush. (Reuters)

A special unit of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) fell victim to an ambush by “terrorists” in the al-Huweija region in Kirkuk on Sunday night, the force announced on Monday.

Twenty-seven of its members were killed in the ambush and ensuing hours long clash.

Another unit from the PMF joined the original group to support it in the fighting, which left several of the “terrorists” dead.

A security official said Iraqi forces were pursuing the terrorists, who had disguised themselves in police uniforms to carry out the ambush.

Head of the PMF Falih al-Fayyad told local media on Monday that Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi had ordered that an investigation be immediately launched to probe the attack.

He vowed that the victims will be avenged.
