An inquest has opened into the death of a man who died after being hit by a train near Port Talbot.

Luciano Bondi, aged 26, was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by a train on the main south Wales line in Margam on Wednesday, March 31.

Paramedics responded to the incident which occurred at 12.15pm, as well as officers from British Transport Police who confirmed that it was not being treated as suspicious.

The inquest held at Swansea Guildhall on Friday heard that a train driver had been approaching Port Talbot at 70mph when "with only a second's warning" saw a "white male running through bushes and across the track".

The incident resulted in disruption on the railway line between Cardiff Central and Swansea which lasted until around 5.30pm.

The inquest into his death was opened by acting senior coroner for Swansea and Neath Port Talbot Colin Phillips.

It has been adjourned until Wednesday, October 6 at 10.30am pending toxicology results.
